    The Graduate University of Science and Technology (UST) and the Korea Industrial Technology Promotion Association (KOITA) announced the results of a survey and analysis of the demand for foreign science and technology masters and doctorate personnel for domestic companies on the 2nd.

    The survey included 300 domestic companies with corporate research institutes, 6 large companies (2%), 13 mid-sized companies (4%), 185 small and medium-sized companies (62%), and 96 venture companies (32%).

    Of the 300 companies, 73 companies, or about 24 percent, were hiring foreign researchers. The average number of foreigners hired per company is 2. By educational background, 1.1 bachelor's degree, 0.6 master's degree, and 0.3 doctor's degree were found, and 0.7 foreigners, or 35% of them, were from Korea. Reasons for using foreign students for R&D (multiple responses) included a lack of domestic researchers (43%), use of them for overseas market entry (43%), and excellent expertise and ability compared to domestic workers (33%).

     

    76% of those who did not hire foreign researchers cited lack of information on foreign students (43%), sufficient domestic researchers (17%), difficulty in communicating Korean (15%) and administrative costs and constraints (9%). However, 69% of the companies surveyed said that foreign researchers should be expanded from the present.

    Sixty percent of companies that have not yet hired foreign researchers say they plan to hire foreign researchers in the future. The preferred educational background was master's (61%), bachelor's (47%), and doctorate (27%).

     

    Currently, there are a total of 86,562 science and engineering graduate students in Korea. There are 8321 foreign students, accounting for about 10% of them.

    According to a survey by the Korea Vocational Competency Research Institute, only 42% of the 2,767 foreign students who obtained doctorate degrees in Korea were employed in Korea, while the remaining 58% continued their careers by returning to their home countries or working abroad.

    Electrical/electronic/computer majors were the highest at 52%, followed by chemical/life/environment at 21%, humanities/social sciences at 12%, and medical/pharmacology/health, machinery, and materials at 8%.

     

    "Foreign graduates with master's and doctorate degrees in Korea are high-quality R&D personnel with both understanding of Korean culture and high-level research capabilities, which can play a role in Korean companies' overseas expansion and create great effects," UST President said.
