  • How to properly dispose food wastes in Seoul
    Issues 2020. 6. 15. 13:19

Korea has a very meticulous program when it comes to the waste disposal and recycling system. While most of the waste and recycling can be straight forward and easy to understand, food waste disposal can be particularly tricky, even for Koreans.

In order to properly dispose of your food waste, first check what method of food waste disposal your district or housing situation utilizes. In Korea, to dispose of food wastes, there is a small fee. Most small residences will use a dedicated food waste plastic bag that you can buy at the local convenience store or supermarket. These bags can be bought in sizes ranging from 1 L to 100 L (70 to 7000 Won). Once the bags are filled, they are usually placed inside a reusable plastic container to be retrieved by the disposal workers. Some residences will have a large container for food wastes. These containers are paid for by the building administrators and food waste are put in without the need for dedicated plastic bags. Larger residences such as apartments will have RFID waste containers that requires an RFID tag to use. These machines will weigh each waste deposit and charge the user according to weight.

Another thing to keep in mind is the days the waste is collected, check with your landlord, local real estate agent or community center to find out what days it is collected. Some dedicated food waste bags will also have the day and times written on the bag.

Next comes what to throw away as food waste.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government has recently outlined a guideline to what should and should not be disposed as food waste.

※ Objects improperly disposed as food waste can break machine equipment and prevent the recycling of resources

    □ How to properly dispose food waste

    ○ Fully remove water (moisture) and impurities (e.g. mud, dirt) before disposing food waste in the designated food waste containers (large volume-based machines, RFID volume-based machines) or designated food waste bags

    ○ Wash salty foods like kimchi, soybean paste, and gochujang (Korean chili paste) with water before disposal

    ○ Finely chop green onion peels and large vegetables like whole radishes, whole cabbages, and whole pumpkins before disposing, as large or long pieces may break machine equipment
